Pool Maintenance Tips
Pool maintenance starts with understanding the importance of its chemical composition, and how to create an effective cleaning system. Eliminate algae buildup and keep your pump and filter functioning at optimum levels by scrubbing the sides of your pool, paying close attention to water levels, and checking the chemistry of the water weekly.
Clean the Filter
Regularly cleaning your pool’s filter, especially during times of increased use, not only reduces the amount of debris in the water but also keeps the piping from getting clogged. These important filters should be cleaned one to two times a week, in addition to backwashing once a month.
Remove Debris
Skimming the surface of your pool frequently helps to keep debris in check and minimizes the strain on your filter. A good rule of thumb is to perform this task daily. You might also want to consider investing in a pool vacuum to eliminate debris that makes its way to the bottom of your pool. These combined efforts should keep your filter free from obstruction and helps the pump run smoothly.
Scrub the Walls
The walls of your pool are magnets for algae buildup if they’re not properly and regularly scrubbed. You can keep algae growth to a minimum by scrubbing the walls that cover the entire length and width of your pool. If you notice stubborn spots along the sides, you can soak a cloth in chlorine and apply it to the affected area. The chlorine will break down the algae, and then you can continue scrubbing to completely remove the buildup.
Check Chemistry for Pool Maintenance
Consistently checking your pool’s chemistry is one of the most important elements of good pool maintenance, and it’s fast and easy to do. Testing should be done at least once a week with a simple kit that you can pick up from any pool supply store. Some of the chemical levels to check are chlorine, acidity and alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid. These chemical compounds help your pool with everything from sunlight protection to bacteria control and prevention of plaster damage. You should also note the clarity of your pool’s water. This is a common indication that the chemical balance of your pool’s water is off and may require a shock to kill bacteria.
Pay Attention to the Water Level
Your pool’s water level is vital for keeping the pump and filter functioning properly. Water levels that are too low can create unnecessary strain on the pump, which can cause it to burn out. Consistently check the water level. The water level can easily be raised by adding water with a garden hose.
