Save Water When You Shower
We use gallons of water every day to bathe. Use a stopwatch and time the length of your shower. Make it a goal to reduce the length of your shower by 2 or 3 minutes. You’ll save several gallons of water, and if you can get your family members on board, you’ll see significant monthly savings on the water bill.
Another way to save water when you shower is by installing a low-flow showerhead. These fixtures allow you to enjoy a great shower with plenty of water pressure but they use fewer gallons per minute than a standard showerhead.
Repurpose Water
Reusing water is an easy way to save water at home. If it takes time for the shower to reach a comfortable temperature, use a bucket to catch the water while you wait. After cooking pasta or rinsing your produce, repurpose this water for your houseplants.
One of the most efficient ways to repurpose water is to install a rain barrel on your gutter’s downspout. Collect rainwater and use this to water your gardens and lawn.
Turn Off the Tap to Save Water at Home
Don’t leave the water running unless necessary. Develop a habit of turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, wash your hands, or shave. Use the water to dampen your skin or toothbrush, then turn it off. Use the tap again when you’re ready to rinse. The average person uses 4 gallons of water to brush their teeth when the water’s left running the whole time.
Only Use the Dishwasher for a Full Load
An easy way to save water at home is by only using the dishwasher when there is a full load. if you only have a few dirty dishes, it’s more efficient to wash them by hand. You’ll save water and reduce your power bill if you only use the machine when it’s full. The same is true of your clothes washing machine. Wait to do laundry until you have a full load.
